Rodney King's Last Interview

This is a youtube video of a direct interview with Rodney King about twenty years after the
beating incident. Unfortunately, as was mentioned in the video, he died two weeks after the video
was shot, at the age of forty-seven. I personally thought it was very interesting, and emotional to
watch him talk. He didn’t want to be remembered as the guy who was beaten up the police, and
wrote a book about what he actually thought his purpose in life was. I never even thought that he
would have such a feeling within him, and felt very sad hearing him say that. The worst part was
that when his wife called 911 during his death, she mentioned that it was the guy who was beaten
up by the police, something that is totally unnecessary in a life or death situation.
The way he spoke made me feel that he was a very humble, and kind hearted man. He
mentioned that he did have hate for the cops who beat him, but that if he walked around bitter
and mad, then he would be doing the same thing they did to him. This is such a nice thing to hear
from a person who was crazily beaten up by the cops, especially even when people like us who
hear about the situation want the cops to be severely punished. My favorite part of the video is
when he says, “There’s not a day that goes by without me thinking about the beating, but its not in
a negative way now, its in a positive way”. He mentions how he wouldn’t change the situation if
he had a chance to, because if the incident didn’t happen to him, “it would be a slower process
of people getting along”.
Such a kind attitude reminds me of the saying, “Don’t judge a book by a cover”. It makes
me upset to think about how society once did, and still does continue to discriminate people just
because of their skin color, in many places around the world. We must put an end to this craziness!
